How do I use Event Tracking?
Important: Event Tracking is a new feature that is only in Google Analyticator 4.3+. If you are using an older version, you will need to upgrade.
Google Analytics now offers Event Tracking. To find more information about Event Tracking, please visit the
official Google documentation.
This new method replaces the old way downloads and external links were being tracked. This old method needed to skew the page views in order to track this information. Since the Google Analytics team finally released Event Tracking for everyone, this is the proper way to now handle these types of events. Event Tracking is automatically enabled by default. If you somehow turn it off and need to turn it back on, it can be located under Settings > Google Analytics > Event tracking. To turn Event Tracking on, simply ensure that the drop down box is set to "Enabled".
If you wish to track your downloads, you will need to configure your download tracking. To learn how to do that, please read this article:
How do I track downloadable files? Also, in order to track your external links, you will need to have External Link tracking enabled. It can be located under Settings > Google Analytics > Outbound link tracking. Make sure this field is set to enabled.
All of your Event Tracking data can now be able to be found in Google Analytics account. To view this data, go to Google Analytics and log into your account. Select "View Report" for the Website Profile you wish to view. On the left hand side of the screen, you will see your dashboard. Select Content and then Event Tracking. This is where you can find all of your information
The way Google Analyticator breaks down the data, and the way Google Analytics will display this data under the Event Tracking section, is as follows:
Downloads:
- Category: Downloads
- Actions: File Extension (ex. MP3, WMV, etc)
- Labels: Full URL of file
Outbound Links:
